Testimony for the Next Generation: Testimony of the Aomori Air Raid

Tami Mori

I woke up at the same time as the siren sounded.
I jumped out of bed at the sound of the warning siren and prepared to go to school in the dark.
I will never forget July 28, 1945, the night of the Aomori air raid. I was a new teacher who had been working at Hashimoto Elementary School for less than a year.
I was a new teacher who had been working at Hashimoto Elementary School for less than a year when I heard a warning: “These days, some teachers don’t come out when it’s their turn. I want you to keep your eyes open and protect the school.
The school principal had just given an instruction to the teachers.
I was on duty, so I said, “Be careful. Go carefully, it’s going to be dangerous tonight.
I was sent to work with my mother’s voice saying, “Be careful.
I remember it was raining that night. I hurried along the pitch-black road, avoiding the puddles of water that glowed eerily and dully.
I crossed the Tsutsumi River, which flowed in pitch black, and came to the front of the Women’s Normal School (now the Cultural Hall).
The school gates were wide open, and female students dressed in black and air-raid hoods came running out. They must be boarding students. In the darkness, they looked like ninjas. I couldn’t help but shudder with nervousness.

When I arrived at Hashimoto Elementary School, I went into the air-raid shelter in the schoolyard made of concrete.
There they are, there they are! The teachers on duty were chatting cheerfully as if they had a thousand visitors. (I remember that the shelter was brightly lit with batteries or something.
The principal’s enthusiasm. (I remember that it was bright in the shelter due to batteries or something.) We continued to talk about the headmaster’s enthusiasm, and that according to information, there would be air raids by enemy planes.
After a short while, the alert was changed to “air raid alert,” and after a short pause, the sound of explosions could be heard.
 The shelter suddenly became quiet.
The teacher, who had been counting the number of planes with his ears, gradually became tense. The sound of explosions was so heavy that he could not tell how many planes were coming. There was an eerie tension in the shelter, as if there was no place to put oneself.
“ZUN! ZUN!
The bombing began.
Masao Kudo, Chuji Yamamichi, and Toru Ishioka were the male teachers. Kiku Soma-sensei, Tomiko Saito-sensei, and Deguchi-sensei. We looked at each other, eye to eye, face to face, and held back our anxiety with one accord.
We were in a perfect bomb shelter, so we couldn’t see what was going on outside.
 How long did it take?
Kudo-sensei and Yamamichi-sensei pushed open the heavy door and went outside to check on the situation.
All at once, an intense roar, incomprehensible shouting and light came through the door, and as soon as the door closed, the silence returned. It was a moment of silence, and everyone remained silent, eyes wide open, waiting for information.
The man who had left did not come back.
What’s going on?
 Everyone was filled with anxiety.
This time, the vice principal, Mr. Ishioka, went outside, but he came right back.
“Oh my God! The night junior high school in the back is on fire. The night school in the back is on fire. Everyone should put it out immediately.
We were the first to get out of the shelter and look outside.
“Ah!
We couldn’t help but stand there.
What we saw there was truly a living hell. We were stunned by the sheer size of the huge B-29 floating in the black sky with a roaring sound. I was stunned by the sheer size of the B-29s. Reflecting the flames of Aomori City that had been burned by incendiary bombs, the beautiful pink color of the B-29s shone in the sky as they flew.
The citizens fleeing beneath them, parents calling out the names of their children, children separated from their parents crying out for their parents, screaming half-crazedly because of the horror, incomprehensible cries swirling around them, were streaming in groups toward Uramachi Station (now Peace Park).
Screaming and shouting! I guess this is what hell really looks like. The line was being chased by B-29s through the flames of the red lotus and continued from the Public Hall (Umite) to Uramachi Station (Yamate). Aomori City was the crucible of a major air raid.
Hashimoto Elementary School was still intact at that time.
The night junior high school was located behind Hashimoto Elementary School. I filled a bucket with water and ran the hundred meters between the school and the adjacent Shinmeisama Shrine.
The middle school was engulfed in flames and the bucket of water was of no use.
I also had to run the hundred meters back to the school with an empty bucket in my hand.
When I came back, Mr. Ishioka pointed to the second floor of the school building.
“Pour water on it! When I returned, Mr. Ishioka was now pointing at the second floor of the school building and shouting, “Pour water on it!
Oh…” That classroom was my fourth grade class. I filled a bucket with water and poured it on the floor. I filled a bucket with water and ran. There was no way the bucket of water would reach the second floor. With the bucket in my hand, I could only watch the smoke from upstairs. The smoke was coming straight up. What was the point of our daily fire drills if we didn’t suspect anything? I felt so foolish. The difference in strength was so great that I just flinched.
I noticed that none of the male teachers were around anymore. They must have changed them out of concern for their families. The oldest teacher, Mr. Soma, gathered all the remaining female teachers and said
“That’s it. Now, let’s get out of here too.
We decided to escape by covering our heads with water from the outer shelter. We decided to escape by covering our heads with water from the outer shelter. I still vividly remember the uncomfortable feeling of a strange slimy feeling in my stomach.
I looked back at the smoking school building like a smoke signal, said “goodbye” in my heart, and blended into the swirl of fleeing citizens.

I quickly lost the teachers and there was no way for me to find them as I swam through the vortex of people.
The Red Lotus in the dark. The burning city, the sound of explosions, the screams, drove me to selflessness. A hundred meters above the ground, a bundle of incendiary bombs was released from its belt and fell, spreading out like an umbrella. The bombs would fall like rain with an eerie “shear” sound.
“When the bombs fall, get down! training is of no use at this time.
Run while looking up, and when you hear that sound, quickly dodge into the shadows. Even if it is a burning building, that is the only way to protect yourself from a bomb.
An old man who was running away with a quilt over his head got down as he was trained to do, but he never got up again. He was apparently hit by a direct hit.
There was a sad sight of a citizen who faithfully followed and carried out the fire drill that he was instructed and trained to do.
I was filled with a sense of helplessness.
While the bombs were falling, I tried to get to Uramachi Station, where people were running away. They were not fleeing, they were being chased. Like a flood, people were being chased by the B-29s in a whirlpool and forced into bags.
A young sister and brother were following behind me. They must have been deflected by their parents. When I looked at them, I saw that their hoods were burning with pale flames. I was holding a bucket tightly, so I drew water from the water for fire prevention and put it out. I put out the fire by rubbing it with my military hand.
Then the bombs started raining down again.
I went into the canal with my young sisters and brothers and hid under a concrete bridge, chest-deep in water.
When we eventually reached Uramachi Station, we saw soldiers. There were also railroad workers. Most powerfully, there was a locomotive that was belching steam and about to depart. Thinking about it now, it was a simple thing, but I knew I could get on it and escape if the need arose.
All the people were chased by B-29s and fled to the fields behind the station.
At some point, I lost sight of my young siblings.
The bombing continued relentlessly, passing the station and attacking the rice fields.
Let’s not run anymore.
It was dangerous, but I knew it didn’t matter how far I ran, so I huddled among the luggage on the platform.
At the station, a station attendant was skillfully putting out a flying fire with a bamboo pole wrapped with a rope. (Training was alive and well here.)
After I stopped running, I could see my surroundings clearly.
The government buildings in front of the station were on fire, but it was the Toyo Biscuit Factory, located alongside the can factory, that was burning like hell.
The fire called out to the others, and soon it turned into a whirlpool and then a tornado, scattering sparks of fire and rising up in tens of meters long columns of fire. It engulfed everything around it.
When I turned my eyes and looked toward Matsubaracho, I saw the large building of Wada Kan, and the factory was actively burning. The houses facing the road were on fire in the middle of the rice fields, just like a fire dragon twisting and spewing fire. The hell in Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s “The Spider’s Thread” must have been like this.
The B-29 attack was finally over.
I realized that I couldn’t keep wearing my soaked shirt and pants forever. Of course, there was no change of clothes.
I dried myself by pulling my arms and opening my legs over the embers of the fire in the government building in front of the station.
At that time, the sky to the east finally began to turn white and people who had fled to the fields gathered around the fire. People who had fled to the fields gathered around the fire, talking about how terrible the air raids had been.
I was horrified to hear stories of dead bodies whose heads had been blown off by direct hits, and mothers who had lost their minds while carrying their dead babies.
This was how the night of the air raid ended.

(II)
The night of the Aomori air raid dawned.
I was wondering what had happened to Hashimoto Elementary School, my alma mater and the school where I worked, so I decided to go back. Now that I was separated from my colleagues, I had no time to think about what everyone else was doing, so I grabbed a bucket and headed for Hashimoto Elementary School.
In front of the station, burnt buildings were crumbling, exposing their wreckage in a heap. There was no longer a single building blocking my view, and I could see all the way to the ocean. Aomori City became a graveyard of burned down buildings.
Hashimoto Elementary School was on its deathbed. The flag stand was burning as a single pillar of fire, and the front of the school building was about to collapse, its frame pillars bursting into red flames.
It must have survived until late.
From the bridge, I could see the burned-out field with a better view. From the bridge, I could see a clearer view of the burned-out field, and a house that was still standing.
I wondered where they were, and I hurried on. I passed Sakae-cho and drove all the way to Matsumori-dori (Hanazono 2-chome). I saw a green tin roof. It must be the roof of my house. I ran with my heart pounding. But then I stopped and was stunned. The green tin roof was the house on the other side of our potato field. In the end, our potato field acted as a firebreak and stopped the fire from spreading. (After that, we continued to live in a house with a tin shack and an intact house facing each other.
The men’s teacher’s school and the Tenrikyo building burned down, but Namiwata Elementary School, a cream-colored, three-story building, remained as majestic as ever.
My father and mother were all safe. My younger brother was running around asking about the safety of his family.
When he heard that everyone was safe, he took out the sake that had been buried in the ground and we rejoiced over the safety of the family with rice mixed with soybeans.

However, it was a battle with a great deal of loss.
My friend from elementary school, Keiko Yokoyama, was burnt to death in an air-raid shelter. My teacher, Sada Narita, also died in the same shelter. I was with the people of the town there.
My childhood friend, Toyochan Fujita, died in the bombing after the air raid.
When I saw the beautiful Mt. Hakkoda in the blue sky at the dawn of the air raid, I felt a deep sense of “being alive.
I would like to conclude my testimony by recalling the air raid and praying for the souls of those who died.

Tami Mori

(I)

Tami Mori

(I)
